Hello and welcome to my August 2020 reading status – last reading status of this summer (from the European perspective)! While in the process of writing this post I realized that the monthly updates keeps me  accountable of what I read, thus encouraging me to try my best to finish at least one book a month.

Since the previous reading status in July I finished 2 books (#proud), while also continuing to read “The Golden Thread” by Kassia St. Clair. It seems at the moment I am more into reading fiction stories rather than historical stories, so I maintain parallel threads of reading.

Currently reading

to the lighthouse virginia woolf readers high tea book cover penguin classics

I’ve just started reading “To the Lighthouse” by Virginia Woolf. I bought it back in 2018, together with “Mrs Dalloway” by the same author – two beautiful Vintage Classics editions. At that moment I read “Mrs Dalloway”, which was an interesting and challenging book, but I postponed reading “To the Lighthouse” … until now πŸ™‚

Finished reading

hag seed margaret atwood readers high tea

The first book finished in August was “Hag-Seed” by Margaret Atwood. It is a modern retelling of “The Tempest” by Shakespeare, part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project. I enjoyed a lot reading it, as it had a double purpose for me: (1) enjoy Atwood’s story βœ“, and (2) learn about Shakespeare βœ“.

a thousand splendid suns khaled hosseini readers high tea

The second book was “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. This books tells the story of two Arab women in Afghanistan, during the 1960-2000s period. It is a moving description of the women’s lives and also of the political and social changes from the Afghan state. You might will shed some tears by the end of the book.

Reading next

As I am on a mission to read books I already own, at least in August (that’s how I got to read “To the Lighthouse” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns”), my next read will also be a book that is already waiting me on the shelf πŸ™‚ Murakami, Orwell, Dostoevsky, and others – plenty to choose from!

‘Till next time … happy reading!
